What is osteoarthritis (OA)?
OA is also called degenerative joint disease or degenerative arthritis and mainly affects joints of the knees, hips, lower back, neck, small joints of the fingers and the bases of the thumb and big toe.
In normal joints, a cartilage forms a smooth surface and covers the end of each bone, acting as a cushion.
In OA, the cartilage breaks down resulting in pain, swelling, and mobility problems.
Over time, pieces of cartilage may break off and float around in the joint. As a result, an inflammatory process takes place and enzymes further damage the cartilage.

- Decreased range of motion
